Three quarto volumes in mottled brown calf with red title labels and gold text and fluerons on spine. Red page edges. Green ribbon page markers. Several hinges beginning to superficially crack at heads toward first raised band. Otherwise hinges intact and strong inside and out. Shelf wear. ¾ inch full thickness scuff to leather near top corner of vol 1 rear board. A few additional scuffs. Corners variably bumped and chipped. Marbled end papers. Punctate old mildew stains at bottom of pg 326-328 in vol 1. Faint stains on recto of rfep in vol 1. Bottom corner of Yyy3 in vol 2 folded. Half inch lacunae involving text at Xx3, Yy3 and Zz3 in vol 3. Scattered mild toning, mostly peripheral. Otherwise, clean, bright, and tight throughout all three volumes. All plates are clean and bright with intact folds. Frankly, they are astounding (and we are not easily moved).

Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) was “one of the intellectual giants of the eighteenth century and, indeed, one of the most accomplished men of all time.” (Heirs 554). He was a Swiss polymath, professor, physician, scientist, and poet who compiled four bibliographies on botany, surgery, medicine, and anatomy (among many other publications). Together they formed the most complete reference work of the time. His personal library of 15,000 volumes and 145 manuscripts sold in 1778 and was donated to the national library in Milan. He was a pupil of Sigfried Albinus and Herman Boerhaave.

Heirs 560. “In these three volumes on anatomy, reproduction, and pathology, respectively, Haller collected various of his shorter writings which were scattered in other works and journals. They represent, with his Icones anatomicae, what he considered to be among his best works. The numerous plates contain his highly exact, clear, and striking representations of anatomic preparations.”
