Quarto in 18th century full brown cats paw leather with red leather label and gold details on spine. Slight splay. Leather scuffed. Corners split. Some loss at head and tail of spine. Tops of joints cracking. Hinges cracking but strong. Marbled page edges and end papers. Prior penciled dealer notes on verso o fffep. Faint toning around edges of title page. Large margins. Minimal foxing. Clean, bright, and tight throughout. Two folding plates at rear.

“[Claude] Pouteau of Lyons (b. 1725) practiced Cheselden’s method [of lateralized lithotomy] and found difficulty in keeping the sound steady. To overcome this he attached to its handle a water-level which he called a “moderateur,” and the operation was referred to as “lithotomy with the level.” He claimed he lost only 3 of 120 lithotomy patients. (Murphy, pg 116/117; cites this 1765 book)
