Full original brown calf quarto volume with red title plate, gold text and details, and five raised bands on spine. Red page edges. Green ribbon intact. Title page in red and black ink. Frontis and plates present (including famous tarantula plate), also with multiple in text figures. Text in Latin. 18th century writing and scribbles on fly leaf. Mild shelf wear. Corners bumped. Top edge cracked and chipped. Hinges cracked internally but boards secure (front board with very small cracks at top and bottom of external hinge). Very slightly cocked. Very minor damp stain variably present at top edge. Otherwise, a clean, bright, and tight copy in good to very good condition. Garrison Morton 68. Baglivi was the first to differentiate between striated and smooth muscle. This book includes several sections on the nature, effects, and treatments of spider bites (as well as the now-famous tarantula plate).This book is also one of the three books that Linnaeus used for his original description of Aranea tarantula (now Lycosa tarantula).
