The Science and Art of Surgery, being a Treatise on Surgical Injuries, Diseases, and Operations, by John Erichsen. An Improved American Edition, from the second enlarged and carefully revised London edition. Illustrated by four hundred and seventeen engravins on wood. Philadelphia, 1860. Original full calf binding with black title plate (as well as later paper title plate) on spine. Gold text (“U.S.A. Hopsital Department” stamped in gold on front board). Top of spine and original title plate chipped.  Corners bumped and leather a bit scuffed. Hinges strong (possibly reinforced by a conservator at some point?). First fly leaf only attached by bottom edge. Otherwise, text block tight throughout. Pages clean and bright. 417 beautiful wood cut engravings demonstrating surgical procedures, anatomy, and pathologic conditions. Measures approximately 9 ½ x 6 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches. First edition of 1853 is Garrison Morton 5602: Erichsen (1818 – 1896) wrote “the most popular textbook on the subject for many years. Erichsen was surgeon to University College Hospital, London, and Lister served as his house surgeon.”
