Mushin, Thoracic Anaesthesia, 1963 (inscribed copy)

Blue cloth with dust jacket and red text. Protective mylar over book secured with old tape which has transferred some discoloration to ffep and rfep. Illustrated with numerous black & white diagrams, radiographs, illustrations, and photographs. Inscribed in black ink on ffep by Mushin: “thanks ?again? Peter for your constant loyalty & dependable cooperation William W. Mushin Dec 1930” (???) Though the penmanship is a bit sloppy, the date does appear to say 1930, but the book was published in 1963. Perhaps in haste Mushin got ahead of himself and penned the 3 prematurely, then absentmindedly filled in the fourth digit as a 0 rather than a 6, thus completing the year? We have another book inscribed by Mushin (to Peter Thompson in 1958) which shows some minor differences in letter forms but the signatures are characteristic and unquestionably match. It would be a strange inscription to forge given the niche subject, low value of the book, and would be quite the blunder if done by a forger. I suspect it was just an absentminded error. Jacket suffering some losses at all corners. I have not removed the mylar to inspect the boards/spine under the jacket. Binding tight. Pages clean and bright.

William Woolf Mushin (1910-1993) was also a medical historian and published The Origins of Thoracic Anesthesia in 1991.
