Pare, Works, 1678

The Works of that Famous Chirurgion, Ambrose Parey, Translated out of Latin and compared with the French by Th. Johnson: Together with Three Tractates Concerning the Veins, Arteries, and Nerve: Exemplified with large Anatomical Figures. Translated out of Adrianus Spigelius. London, Printed by Mary Clark, and are to be sold by John Clark at Mercers Chappel at the Lower End of Cheapside. M DC LXXVII. (1678)

Folio in late 19th or early 20th century half brown leather with red title label and raised bands over spine. Blue and red marbled paper over boards. Joints/hinges later repaired, now strong. Boards and spine scuffed. Bookplate of Harold M. Tovall on front pastedown. Tovall’s name also written in pencil and pen on ffep (one dated 1917). Rectilinear stains at corners of end papers. Mild foxing and toning throughout, but mostly bright. Title page in black and red. 1 inch tear bottom of R5, near text but not involving. A few other small stains in margins here and there. Binding tight.

Though Ambroise Pare was a surgeon, this book includes many chapters that range far afield from medicine and surgery, including (but not limited to) incubi and succubi, miner’s encounters with subterranean demons, poisons, embalming, Pare’s journeys and/or voyages, discussions of why Pare refused to prescribe mummy dust, and copiously illustrated discussions of diverse and sundry animals and monsters. The more common topics of anatomy, physiology, wounds/trauma, diseases/pathology, surgical instruments, surgical/operative techniques, tumors, obstetrics, prescriptions/pharmaceuticals, and symptomatology are, of course, thoroughly incorporated into this work as well. There is also a chapter of forensic interest on how to make medicolegal reports for coroners/judges, as well as how to embalm cadavers.

The first French edition was 1575 (Garrison-Morton 5565) and the fifth, most complete, edition was 1598. The first (1634) English edition was rendered from the 1582 Latin edition (supplemented by the French, as the title page indicates). We offer here the 1678 last English edition.

Pare (1510 – 1590) remains one the most famous surgeons in history. He was a contemporary of Andreas Vesalius. Many of the xylographs in this book are plagiarized from Vesalius, Conrad Gessner, and elsewhere. Spigelius was an anatomist in Padua who studied under Fabrici.
