Erskine, Sermons, 1744 (1st American ed)

A Collection of Sermons on Several Subjects. Preach'd, Some by the Rev. Ebenezer Erskine, M.A. Minister of the Gospel at Stirling; and Others by the Rev. Ralph Erskine, M.A. Minister of the Gospel at Dumfermline, and Autor of the Gospel-Sonnets. With a Preface by the Rev. Mr. Thomas Bardbury. Boston: Printed for Josha Blanchard at the Bible and Crown in Dock-Square. 1744. 
Early, likely original, full brown leather binding. Scuffed, with losses. Front board striving to stay attached. Rear hinge cracked but joint strong. Mildew stains of both paste downs and end papers. Blue ink 20th century owner’s inscription of front pastedown. Ffep tattered. Title page town across and stitched in an amateur fashion. First couple of signatures barely attached. D4&5 torn and folded at gutter. Several signatures starting. 1834 advertisement for essential oils folded loose inside. Last leaf torn at head of gutter with loss of test along inner margin. Additional other minor tears (some with minor text losses), creases, and other blemishes throughout. Scattered foxing and toning, but leaves mostly bright and margins well retained (except for pages v – 4, which are trimmed slightly smaller).

Ebenezer Erskine (22 June 1680 – 2 June 1754) was a Scottish minister who, having apparently defended doctrines pertinent to the Marrow controversy, ultimately rejected the authority of the General Assembly, dissent form the Church of Scotland, and establish the Secession Church.
