Willem Einthoven (1860 – 1927) was a Dutch physiologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1924 for his development of the electrocardiography. His publications include the first illustration of an electrocardiogram recording, and the first tracing of atrial fibrillation. His apparatus was known as the “string galvanometer.” His article in this journal, titled About Some Applications of the String Galvanometer (pages 182 – 192), describes his development of the electrocardiogram machine. Einthoven named the P, Q, R, S, T, and U waves of the EKG tracing (nomenclature still used today).

The editorship of this issue includes Max Planck (of Planck Constant fame) and Wilhelm Rontgen (first to detect the X-ray).

The Annalen der Physik is one of the oldest scientific journals on physics, dating back to the 18th century. It was in this journal that Max Planck published Einstein’s paper on relativity (in 1905, one year after the issue we offer here for sale).
